Benjamin gawked as he was astounded. Waves of uncertainty clogged his mind. He had questions to ask to his own self and him as well, lots of them, but couldn’t find the words to squeeze those questions out of his mind. Feebly, he looked around, still skeptical about the authenticity of the setting and the circumstances, when his alter ego started walking up to him. Time went slow with each step his self-image took. Beads of sweat dropped down Benjamin’s face as he saw his own self walking towards him. It felt like he was looking into a mirror. Not just a mirror that showcased what he used to be & what he had lost with time but also the one that gave him the opportunity to examine himself and retrospect his past actions. He lent out his hand & smiled. Benjamin looked into his eyes & witnessed compassion, positivity, confidence & empathy. He witnessed his inner soul.
“You look puzzled to see me”, he said. Benjamin didn’t utter a word. “You are the reason I am standing here with you right now Benjamin. I am your ally”, he continued.”I have always been following you Benjamin. Where ever you went, whatever you did, I followed you. You were always concerned about your life and you believed in yourself. I have always admired you for what you did. The manners in which you handled your responsibilities towards yourself and your loved ones obligated me to always track you. That’s the law of nature Benjamin, which I thought you would never forget. But, I suppose I was wrong. You stopped caring eventually; your own life has turned to ashes owing to your own nihilism. Your obliviousness and cynicism has curtailed the distance between us Benjamin. I am your confederate, but the Law of nature also compels me to not wait for anyone. I have not arrived here to help you. That is not in my jurisdiction. In fact, I am about to cross you in the passage of your life.”
“Nurse!! I see some movement”, an elated Daniel yelped. “Can you please get the Doctor?”. The nurse escorts the Doctor in to the ICU. “Don’t worry Mr. Daniel Fredrickson, your friend is fine”, says the Doctor after checking Benjamin’s vital signs. “Welcome back buddy!! I thought we lost you forever”, Daniel said with moist eyes. “What happened?” Benjamin asked weakly. “I am not so sure but I got a call at around 9:45 pm yesterday that a car numbered 475 ran over you at St. Patrick Avenue. The Police escorted you to the nearest hospital and I reached as soon as I got the news. I was here the whole time, while you were being operated”. “As we started the operation after sedation, the situation got a bit tricky when suddenly your heart rate jumped up. But eventually the condition was brought under control”, the Doctor explained. “Don’t worry, you are fine now”, the Doctor says compassionately. “Your friend was there with you the whole time, when you needed him the most”, he professed as he left. Benjamin acknowledges Daneil’s concern with a smile & looks out the window into the sunshine and says “Yes, He was!!”, as a tear rolls down his eye.
